Description

In view of the current political turmoil in the Russian Federation, it is very important that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is upheld in Russia. This applies especially to Article 19 of the UDHR: "That everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers". Regrettably Russia has major problems in that area, evidenced by many tragic incidences in recent times – such as the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and the tragic death of Russian journalist Slavina, who died after setting herself on fire. Slavina's website carried out investigative reporting and covered opposition to President Vladimir Putin; a rarity in regional journalism which faces pressure from local authorities. So this must change. Russian authorities and Russian law enforcement agencies – such as the FSB – must make a greater effort of upholding and protecting fundamental human rights in Russia; such as Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Press as enshrined in the UDHR. It is very important that the ruling United Russia Party – Yedinaya Rossiya – understands this, and that the Russian judicial system honours and upholds the UDHR in Russia; by charging, convicting and punishing those people who are responsible for violating Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Press in Russia. It also very important to uphold Article 20 of the UDHR in the Russian Federation: "That everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association"; and Article 21: "That everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives". We also wish to point out to President Putin, the United Russia Party and the Kremlin that they mustn't be afraid of change. In fact, social and political change is part of human life, and should be embraced and welcomed. So they should welcome and embrace the return of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny to Mother Russia – as Alexej Nawalnyj very much symbolises change and political progress in today’s Russia. And we are sure that in due course of time President Vladimir Putin will realise this, and come to understand that having the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in the country is not a liability, but rather a big asset, so that democracy and freedom of speech can evolve and improve in Russia :)
